In the ancient times, Ayurveda was learnt and taught only orally.later on in order to preserve this precious wisdom for future generations , this wholesome knowledge about life was compiled systematically to form Samhithas or compilations. Ayurveda is vast medical science and the only healing science which heals at body ,soul,mind and our consciousness.
As the essentials of Ayurveda were passed down through the generation’s three main texts emerged overtime which are commonly known as major ayurvedic classics or (Brhattrayi). These are as follows :
Charaka Samhitha (Treatise on Medicine),
Susrutha Samhitha (Treatise on Surgery) and
Ashtanga Samgraha/Ashtang hridyam ( Compendium on the basic principles and medicine)
These are considered to be oldest text available today
Similarly there are minor ayurvedic classics known as (laghutryi) which are as follows :
Sharangadhara Samhita (Treatise on Ayurvedic Formulations)
Bhavaprakasha
(Compendium on herbs and their minutest details )
Madhava Nidana (Treatise on Diseases ,causes symptoms and their complications )
Brief introduction of these ancient sources of wisdom

1. CHARAKA SAMHITA : It is an ideal ancient treatise based on eternal fundamentals and basic principles. It is one of the most important foundational ancient authoritative writings on Ayurveda. It has 8sections namely Sutra (General principals), Nidāna (Pathology) Vimāna (dealing with Specific tools of diagnosis and medical ethics), Śārīra (human anatomy and embryology), Indriya (related to Sensorial prognosis elaboration of diagnosis & prognosis of disease on the basis of senses.), Chikitsā (Therapeutic part dealing with medicine ) Kalpa ( contains information about Pharmaceutics and toxicology describing usage and preparation of medicine.) and Siddhi (include chapters describing general principles of 'Panchkarma). Basically it is scientific document which contains detailed information about seasons, diet, thoughts ,consciousness,metaphysics , medicines, therapeutic measures, about diseases their diagnosis , progonosis .treatments , human anatomy ,embryology ,and various other guidelines for promoting and maintaining good health for everyone.
2. SUSHRUTA SAMHITA :
(Sushruta's compendium), which describes the ancient tradition of surgery is considered as one of the most ancient, encyclopaedic &authoratative classical book of Indian medicine.This text mainly deals with surgery and provides detailed information about incisions ,scraping, alkali and thermal cauterization , fractures their types and treatment ,excisions , draining abscesses , management of haemorrhoids , fistula ,intestinal obstruction ,hernias , accidental perforation of abdomen , caeserian section ,opthamology and cataract surgery ,suturing techniques etc , Sushruta was pioneer in various surgical techniques like skin grafting , rhinoplasty , labioplasty ,herniotomy ,fistula treatment etc . He was also first to give classification of the bones, eye diseases ,variety of fractures , dislocations and their management , first precise definition of health , details about 101 blunt & 20 sharp instrument suitable for surgery, sterilization techniques, marma vigyan etc. Different kinds of operations like excision, incision, scarification, puncture, probing, draining of fluid & suturing, are also part of this gem written on surgery . Sushriuta is also known as father of surgery .
3. Ashtanga Samgraha/Ashtang hridyam:These are considered to be the compendia of Charka and Sushruta Samhitas though it also gives its own views on different topics.It is easy presentation of basic principles of ayurveda . These texts covers wide range of topics esp mentions subtypes of kapha dosha , personal hygiene, the causes of illness, the influence of season and time on the human , diet ,types and classifications of medicine, the significance of taste(madhur ,amala, lavana, katu , tikta and kshaya ),pregnancy and possible complications during birth, Prakriti, individual constitutions and various aids for establishing a prognosis. These also have detailed information on Five-actions therapies (Skt. pañcakarma) .
LAGHUTRYI
1. Sharangadhara Samhita: Written in the 13th century, Sharangadhara Samhita describes different types of pulse in different disease conditions. This Samhita is prized for its enumeration and description of numerous pharmacological formulations and contains the first textual elaboration of diagnosis by means of the pulse.
2 . Bhavaprakasha nighantu :It is a well-organized and detailed -presentation of herbs .It provides detailed information abt herbs, their parts used , dosage etc .
2. Madhava Nidana:It is prized for covering a wide range of diseases. It gives detailed description of disease etiology (disease doctrines), prodroma and cardinal signs and symptoms, lists diseases along with their causes, symptoms, and complications. beside this there are many other valuable texts like raj nighantu , yog ratnakar , bhaishajya ratnavali etc . This holistic science offers us detailed info abt living healthy happy and long life
