History

Ayurveda is a living tradition of a health science of India , which is in practice since thousands of years . It is pride of India. It is an ancient vast science which originated thousand years back. It is part of Atharvaveda. Most of Vedic healing verses occur in Atharva Veda which are devoted to varied conditions such as wounds, epilepsy, leprosy, eyes, ear diseases etc. Ayurveda has deep history. It is mentioned in almost all religious texts in some or other way such as Ramayana, Garud purana, Shrimad bhagwad purana, Bhagwad Gita etc . Our ancient seers, the highly evolved souls meditated and worked together to determine ways and means for mankind so that people can live very long and healthy life. They considered dharma (following the path of righteousness ), artha (earning money in a legal way ), kama(fulfilling desire) and moksha(salvation) to be the purpose of life . For that we need long life so ayurveda originated, which means science of life which is complete in dealing with physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects of human life .
Ancient seers envisioned two fundamental principles behind existence :purusha (the primal spirit )and prakriti (or great nature) . The union of these two, spirit and matter (purusa and prakriti ) contains seeds of all manifestation.
In prehistoric times Ayurveda was taught as Guru Shishya parampara means teacher to followers (disciples) and then further to other followers. Before the arrival of writing, the ancient wisdom of healing, prevention, and longevity was a part of the spiritual tradition of universal religion. In all ancient texts like Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Kashyap Samhita etc there is slight difference related to the origin of ayurveda about how the ayurveda descended or lineage or how it had spread.
The knowledge of Ayurveda was handed down from Lord Brahma to Prajapathi, he in turn taught it to Ashwini Kumaras (twins), from them it was passed to Lord Indra he then taught it to sage Bhardwaj, who further taught it to Atri’s son (Atreya Punarvasu) and other sages, they taught it to Agnivesa and others and they (Agnivesha and other disciples ) composed treatises, each one separately. So ultimately it was spread among lot of disciples like Agnivesha, Bhel, jatukaran , Prashar, Harit, Kashyapa Bhrigu, Atri, Vasishtha, Dhanvantri, Chywan, Janak etc . Many of them have compiled their knowledge of ancient wisdom in Samhitas like Kashyap Samhita , Bhel Samhita etc. These sages, physicians/surgeons of the time were the deeply devoted holy people, who saw health as an integral part of spiritual life. It is believed that they had this knowledge of deepest science of Ayurveda through meditation. That is, the knowledge of the use of the various methods of healing, prevention, longevity, and surgery came through divine revelation. These revelations were transcribed from oral tradition into written form, so that each human being should have healthy and balanced long life which covers all aspects whether its physical, mental social or spiritual .

So presently Ayurveda has very vast text . Now lot of detailed and authentic treatises on ayurveda are available which is boon to mankind for healthy and balanced long life.
